Receiving dozens of junk emails a day is not only annoying, it wastes your valuable time sorting through what's important and what's not. At Bacan, we want your workflow to be clean. Configuring the spam filter is easier than it seems and here we'll teach you to master it in 5 minutes.
1. Finding the tool
First, log in to your control panel. Don't be overwhelmed by all the icons — let's go straight to what we need.
-
Log in to your cPanel.
-
Scroll to the Email section.
-
Click the Spam Filters icon (identified with the Apache SpamAssassin logo).
2. Activation and Spam Score
Once inside, you'll see the system is disabled by default so as not to interfere with your emails until you decide to enable it.
-
Enable processing: You'll see a toggle next to "Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam". Click to set it to "On".
-
Adjust the Threshold (Score): Below you'll see the Spam Threshold Score option.
-
Support note: It defaults to 5. If you're still getting a lot of spam, lower it to 4. If legitimate emails are being marked as spam, raise it to 6.
-
3. Advanced Configuration (Whitelists and Blacklists)
-
Click the blue link that says "Show Additional Configurations" at the bottom of the page.
-
Whitelist: Here you can add emails or full domains (example:
*@importantclient.com). The system will never block these emails. -
Blacklist: Here you put the addresses you want to block at the root. Once added, their emails won't even try to enter your inbox.
4. Auto-delete or Spam Folder?
You have two ways to handle email detected as junk:
-
Auto-Delete: If you're very confident in your configuration, you can enable this so spam is automatically deleted. Warning: if a good email ends up there, you won't be able to recover it.
-
Spam Box (Recommended): This option creates a "Spam" folder in your email. This way you can occasionally check if there's anything important before emptying it.
Bacan Pro-Tip: If you receive spam that seems to come from "yourself" (spoofing), don't panic — you haven't been hacked. Go to the "Email Deliverability" section in your cPanel and make sure the SPF and DKIM records are active. This helps servers worldwide know that you are the only one authorized to send emails from your domain.
Key takeaways:
-
Always enable the main toggle so the filter starts working.
-
Don't lower the score to 1 or 2 unless you want to block almost everything — 5 is the ideal setting.
-
Use the Whitelist for your trusted providers and avoid surprises with lost invoices.
