Transferring a domain means moving its management from one registrar to another. If you have a domain at another provider and want to bring it to Bacan to manage everything in one place, the process is straightforward although it requires a few specific steps.
Prerequisites
- The domain must be more than 60 days old since registration or since the last transfer. Newly registered or recently transferred domains cannot be moved.
- The domain must be unlocked at your current registrar. Most domains have a transfer lock enabled by default. You must disable it manually from your current provider's panel.
- You must have access to the domain holder's email, as you'll receive a confirmation email during the process.
Steps to transfer the domain
- Obtain the authorization code (EPP code) from your current registrar's panel. This code is essential to initiate the transfer. It's usually called EPP code, Auth Code or transfer code.
- Unlock the domain at your current registrar. Look for the "Unlock domain" or "Disable transfer lock" option in the domain management panel.
- Initiate the transfer from Bacan. Log in to your client area at Bacan, select the domain transfer option, enter the domain name and EPP code.
- Confirm the transfer by email. You'll receive an email at the domain holder's address to approve the process. You must accept within the indicated time (normally 5 days).
- Wait for confirmation. The complete process can take between 3 and 7 days, depending on the extension and the source registrar.
Is the domain renewed when transferred?
For most extensions, the transfer includes an additional 1-year renewal on top of the period you already have active. This means you don't lose your remaining domain time when transferring.
Will my website lose visibility during the transfer?
No — as long as the nameservers and DNS configuration are maintained correctly during the process. The transfer affects domain management (who the registrar is) but does not automatically change where the website is hosted. As long as the DNS configuration remains the same, your website will continue working normally.
What if I don't want to transfer the domain but do want to host my site at Bacan?
You don't need to transfer the domain to use Bacan's hosting. You just need to change the nameservers at your current registrar to point to Bacan. You can find more details in the guide on how to connect an external domain to Bacan.
