How long does a domain transfer take?

If you're transferring your domain, take into account how long the process takes until the transfer is complete.

The duration of a domain transfer depends on the extension. For example, a .com, .org or .net domain transfer takes approximately between 1 and 7 calendar days.

You should know that while the domain transfer is underway, the domain will continue to work normally.

  • If you keep the same DNS, the transfer process will be transparent.
  • But if you assign different DNS or sign up for new hosting, once the transfer is complete you'll need to create the email accounts and upload the website to the new server again.

If you're transferring both the domain and hosting, it's a good idea to change the DNS to Bacan's before starting the transfer process, since once the process is initiated, no changes will be possible until the transfer is complete.

Approval and expected timing

The transfer must be accepted by the domain administrator. The administrator has up to 5 days to approve it. After approval, some transfers complete in less than an hour, while others can take up to 7 days, depending on the extension and registrar.

To start the process, make sure you have the transfer code and access to the domain administrator's email. Allow at least 7 days when planning the move.
