WHM and cPanel — what is the difference?

This is often a confusing topic. Here we explain all the differences and what each one is used for.

If you want to understand the difference between cPanel and WHM, you have come to the right place. Here are some details about each.

What is WHM?

Web Host Manager, better known by its acronym WHM, is a panel through which you can manage and create various hosting accounts. It is the type of panel that our reseller clients receive under cPanel.

Some of the key features of WHM are:

  • Server administration
  • Creating, deleting, or suspending accounts
  • Server configuration management
  • Managing account features and hosting settings
  • Adding domains to the server
  • Maintaining the control panel and system in general
  • Restoring cPanel accounts
  • File transfer management
  • Reseller branding customization

Every time you create a hosting account from your WHM panel, you are effectively creating a cPanel account. Read on to learn more.

What is cPanel?

cPanel, or Control Panel, is a panel through which all the features of a hosting account can be managed. It is the control panel that our cPanel hosting clients receive.

Tasks that hosting administrators can perform from cPanel include:

  • Managing the account's files
  • Editing the domain's DNS records
  • Installing web applications
  • Managing domains and subdomains
  • Reviewing website traffic
  • Restoring account data and creating backups
  • Creating and managing databases
  • Managing email services and accounts

So what is the actual difference between WHM and cPanel?

WHM is aimed at resellers, or hosting owners who need multiple webmasters to have access to different domains — so they can give a cPanel account to each webmaster.

cPanel is designed to serve one or several websites managed by a single webmaster.
