The «508 Resource Limit Is Reached» error means that your hosting account has persistently exceeded its assigned resource limits.
The monitored resources are:
- CPU
- Virtual Memory
- Physical Memory
- Number of concurrent processes.
- Input/output operations per second.
All these resources are managed through Cloudlinux. Cloudlinux is the operating system we use on all our servers and allows us to prevent a single hosting account from «devouring» the resources of the entire server.
In general, the «508 Resource Limit Is Reached» error message can mean three things:
- Your hosting is under attack. Possibly because the software you use is insecure or poorly installed or configured. Ask one of our technicians to install a security package on your website.
- The plugins or templates you have installed contain a programming error. They may be consuming excessive memory or leaving processes open. Make sure that all software you use is updated to its latest version.
Your website is so successful that you need a higher hosting plan. Your current plan is no longer sufficient and you will need to pay a bit more to accommodate all your concurrent users. It is easy to understand that a site with 1,000 visitors per month is very different from one with 100,000. In this case, you should consult our sales team to adjust your plan to a service that fits your needs.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS ERROR?
The main objective is to maintain the stability and quality of the service we offer to ALL our clients. If your website is affected by this message, we assure you that it has a solution, but we will need to size your needs correctly so all clients receive the service they deserve.
THIS IS HAPPENING ON MY UNLIMITED HOSTING SERVICE, WHERE I HAVE 80 DOMAINS INSTALLED. WHAT CAN I DO?
We have clients with 80 or more domains on the same hosting account who have never seen this message, and others with just 1 or 2 domains who see it every day. Most likely, only one or two of your domains are consuming all the resources. Ask our support department to help you identify which ones. The simplest solution may be to install those resource-heavy domains on a separate hosting account.
How can I see the reason for the 508 error in my control panel?
If your provider allows it (we do allow our clients access to this information), you can see when and why your website is hitting the limits assigned to your hosting account. Just go to your control panel and look for «Metrics» — the section with your website statistics — and inside that section you will find a button that says «Resource Usage». When you enter, you can see recent incidents or, if everything has been running fine, you will see a message accordingly.
There is a button labeled «Details». Clicking it will show you specific statistics about your website's performance, and if there are problems, which aspect of resource consumption is causing issues.
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ON MY END?
We have found that in many cases, a website can generate this problem because the code it is using is poorly designed, or perhaps a plugin is causing issues. Always keep the latest version of any software you use installed, and if possible, temporarily disable plugins one by one. One of them may be causing the problem.
Make sure to check your error logs. Often you can find good clues there to identify where the problem lies.
