How to keep your WordPress site secure

My WordPress site works perfectly, but I'm worried about getting hacked. What should I do to avoid this threat?

Of all the tools developed for the web, WordPress is one of the most prominent and beneficial for those who use it. Many websites, especially blogs, have been created on this platform, which is not only free but also very complete and easy to use, allowing any user with a little interest to build an impressive website without any knowledge of IT or programming. But nothing can be perfect, and WordPress is also exposed to cyberthreats that are abundant on the web — threats that could destroy months or even years of work. Fortunately, for every problem there is a solution, and for WordPress there are several tips that will help keep your website safe. This does not mean the site cannot be hacked, but these measures will at least keep intruders at a distance:

  • Always update to the latest version: updates will appear in the upper right area of your WordPress dashboard and can be applied with a single click.
  • Also update all installed plugins to their latest available version.
  • Use security plugins such as WordPress Security. At Bacan we recommend Wordfence. These plugins include various features to back up content, migrate the website, run antivirus scans, hide the WordPress version you're using, and much more. Hackers usually need to know the WordPress version in order to attack, so keeping it hidden makes their job much harder.
  • If you have doubts about the security of your site, contact our support team. We'll be happy to review your website and guide you on the best techniques to protect it.
  • Change passwords regularly.
  • Make frequent backups, so that if an unexpected attack occurs, not everything will be lost.

Additionally, at Bacan we add a security layer with our application firewall, which enables:

  • Real-time access monitoring and control.
  • Virtual patching. Lets us fix security issues in applications without touching the code.
  • Full HTTP traffic logging. Facilitates monitoring and detection of security issues.
  • Continuous passive security assessment. With more than 25,000 security rules to block attacks targeting your website.
  • Web application hardening. Seamlessly integrated with applications like WordPress.
