Email redirects: within the same domain only

Avoid spam problems and incorrect configurations. Discover how email redirects should be used safely.

What are email redirects really for?

If you manage emails from your control panel (whether DirectAdmin or cPanel), you've probably seen the "Redirect" or "Forwarder" option for emails. It's a useful tool, but also easy to misunderstand.

Important: Email redirects are designed for use within the same domain only. Using them to forward to external accounts (like Gmail, Outlook, etc.) can cause you more problems than benefits.

Why is forwarding emails to other domains not allowed?

  1. Generates false spam positives
When you forward an email from your server to another domain (for example, from sales@yourdomain.com to youremail@gmail.com), the system sends it as if it were the original sender. This usually triggers spam filters at services like Gmail, which detect this action as suspicious.

  2. Affects server reputation
If your server forwards messages that are then marked as spam, it may be penalized. This affects not just you, but other users sharing the same server.

  3. Does not guarantee reliable delivery
Forwarded emails can be lost, delayed or directly rejected by destination servers. And you won't even receive a failure notification in many cases.

How to correctly use email redirects

If you need to organize or redirect emails within your domain, you can do so:

  1. From your control panel (DirectAdmin or cPanel):

    • Go to the "Email Redirects" or "Forwarders" section.

    • Create a valid redirect, for example:
      info@yourdomain.com to support@yourdomain.com

  2. Use internal aliases to centralize emails.
For example, you can make all messages sent to sales@yourdomain.com arrive at contact@yourdomain.com.

Useful tips

  • If you need to access your emails from other services (like Gmail), use IMAP or POP3 to check your mailbox from there, instead of forwarding.

  • You can configure email clients like Outlook, Thunderbird or Gmail itself to check your domain email account directly.

  • If you're using Webmail, remember you can manage all your emails from one place without external redirects.

Conclusion
