WHOIS (which in English means "who is") allows you to query any domain to ask "who are you?" — though the amount of information returned decreases every year as data protection laws (GDPR and others) have blocked more and more information. For example, in the past you could find out who owned a domain — but that's no longer possible.
90% of WHOIS data is now hidden — what's still useful?
As you can see, practically nothing remains after GDPR. But some useful information is still available:
- Expiry date
- Date of last change to the domain
- Domain registrar — very useful if you want to transfer a domain, as the WHOIS will tell you whether the domain is in "Active" status, which is the status needed to allow a transfer
- State/Country of the domain owner
- DNS nameserver names — this can tell you which hosting provider a domain is hosted with
That's it. But these are still very useful and important data points.
The information listed above is public and available to everyone.
