What are Glue Records or Child Nameservers?

Need to install a DNS server under your own domain name? Here's the information you need to achieve it.

When talking about a Glue Record (glue means to stick/attach), we're referring to a DNS record through which an IP address can be associated. In other words, a glue record is simply the IP address that you attach to your domain to use as a DNS server name.

If you want to use your own cloud server as a DNS server, you'll need to add the Glue Record so the IP address used by the server can resolve effectively.

In short, if you're thinking of using your own nameservers rather than your provider's, you need to create two subdomains that will serve this function. For example:

  1. ns1.yourdomainname.com
  2. ns2.yourdomainname.com

For instance, if you registered the domain "myowndomain.com" and want to use ns1.myowndomain.com and ns2.myowndomain.com as its DNS servers, you'll need to create the glue records ns1 and ns2.

How to create Glue Records

Creating Glue Records is very simple. Here's the step-by-step process:

  • Go to the "My Domains" section.
  • Find the domain and click "Manage".
  • Find the Glue Records tab and click "Manage".
  • Enter the DNS server name and its IP address.
  • Finally click "Create".

Done! Your Glue Records are created. You can also edit the IP or delete them if needed later.
