What is a VPS?

Learn what a VPS is, how it works, and whether it is the right choice for your website compared with shared hosting and dedicated servers.

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It is a type of hosting that gives you more resources, control, and performance than shared hosting, without reaching the full cost of a dedicated server.

Technically, it is a portion of a physical server that is virtually divided so it behaves as if it were an independent server for you.

How does a VPS work?

Imagine a building as the physical server and several apartments as the VPS instances. Each tenant has a separate space with defined resources, even though the building is shared.

That is how a VPS works in practice:

  • It has its own operating system.

  • It receives a defined amount of CPU, RAM, and storage.

  • You can install software, reboot the system, and configure it with much more freedom than in shared hosting.

How is it different from other hosting types?

Feature Shared Hosting VPS Hosting Dedicated Server
Shared resources Yes No, resources are isolated No, resources are exclusive
Server control Limited Medium to high Full
Performance Variable Stable Very high
Cost Low Medium High
Scalability Limited High High

When is a VPS a good choice?

A VPS is often ideal if:

  • Your website receives significant traffic or constant load.

  • You need to install custom applications.

  • You run demanding platforms such as online stores, CRM systems, or custom web apps.

  • You want more security, control, and stability.

Real example: if you have a WordPress and WooCommerce store that is growing month after month, a VPS can provide a major improvement in speed and consistency.

What about support? Do I need to be technical?

At Bacan.com, we offer both managed VPS and self-managed VPS options:

  • Managed VPS: we take care of maintenance, security, and technical support.

  • Self-managed VPS: you get full control, but you are expected to know how to administer the server yourself.
