Yes, you can use Bacan hosting even if your domain is registered with another provider. They are independent services. All you need to do is point your domain to the Bacan server by changing the nameservers (DNS name servers) in your current registrar's panel.
What are nameservers and why do they need to be changed?
Nameservers are the servers responsible for translating your domain name into an IP address. When someone types yourdomain.com in their browser, the nameservers indicate which server the request should be directed to.
If you have your domain at another provider, their nameservers point to that provider's servers. For the domain to lead to your Bacan hosting, you must update those nameservers with the details that Bacan will provide when your plan is activated.
Steps to connect your domain to Bacan
- Sign up for a hosting plan at Bacan. You will receive a welcome email with Bacan's nameservers (typically like
ns1.bacan.comandns2.bacan.com). - Log in to the management panel of your domain at the provider where you registered it (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Dondominio, etc.).
- Find the nameservers or DNS section within your domain's settings.
- Replace the current nameservers with Bacan's.
- Save the changes. Propagation can take between 1 and 48 hours, although in most cases it completes within a few hours.
Can I transfer my domain to Bacan instead of just pointing it?
Yes. Domain transfer is an option if you prefer to have everything in one place. The process involves obtaining the authorization code (EPP code) from your current registrar and requesting the transfer from the Bacan panel. Note that domains cannot be transferred during the first 60 days after registration or since the last transfer.
Pointing the nameservers is faster and doesn't involve a change of ownership or mandatory waiting periods. Transfer, on the other hand, takes longer (several days) but centralizes management.
Will I lose anything during the nameserver change?
During the propagation period, some visitors may see the old version and others the new one, depending on which cached DNS they have. To minimize this effect, Bacan recommends having the website ready on the new server before making the nameserver change.
Email may be affected during the transition if you also manage it from the previous server. Check the email section to see how to prepare the migration without losing messages.
