How do I move my website between hosting accounts? 🚚

Step-by-step guide to migrate your website, emails, and databases without losing any information. Find out how to do it yourself or how we can help at Bacan.

Moving a website is like moving house: it requires organization so nothing gets lost along the way. A website is not just what we see; it's an ecosystem that includes files, emails, and databases.

At Bacan.com, we've been carrying out and supervising migrations for over two decades. Whether you're moving from another provider to us or between your own accounts, here is the definitive roadmap to make sure everything arrives safe and sound.

1. Moving the website files 📁

Files are the "furniture" of your digital home. To move them, the most reliable method is FTP.

  • Step 1: Connect to your old hosting via an FTP client (such as FileZilla) and download all files to your computer. Most are in the public_html folder. Don't forget to check if you have important files in non-public folders.

  • Step 2: Connect to your new account at Bacan and upload those same files to the public_html folder.

  • Note: Depending on the size of your website, this process can take from a few minutes to a couple of hours.

2. Migrating your email accounts ✉️

We don't want you to lose a single important message. The process is simpler than it seems:

  1. Create the accounts: First of all, access your new panel (DirectAdmin or cPanel) at Bacan and create the same email accounts you had before.

  2. Sync: We recommend using the Imapsync Online tool. You just need the access details (username, password, and server) from both the old and new accounts. The tool will automatically copy all messages and folders from one server to another.

3. Transferring the databases 🗄️

If you use WordPress, PrestaShop, or any CMS, the database is the "brain" of your website.

  1. Export: Log in to the phpMyAdmin of your old hosting, select your database, and click "Export" to get a .sql file.

  2. Prepare the destination: In your Bacan account, create a new database and a user with full permissions on it.

  3. Import: Log in to the phpMyAdmin of the new server and "Import" the .sql file you downloaded.

  4. Final adjustment: Don't forget to update your website's configuration file (such as wp-config.php in WordPress) with the new database name and username.

Would you prefer we do it for you? 🛠️

We know that a manual migration can be daunting. At Bacan.com we offer solutions so you don't take risks:

  • Free Migration (cPanel): If you're coming from another hosting with cPanel and have a complete backup, we restore it on our servers at no additional cost.

  • Manual Migration: If you don't have a backup or prefer a personalized migration assisted by experts, our technical team can perform the manual migration. Price starts from $25, varying depending on the number of emails and databases to transfer.

Don't forget 📌

  • Order: Migrate files first, then emails, and finally databases.

  • Safety: Don't close your old hosting until you confirm everything works on the new one.

  • Verification: Use the "hosts" file on your computer to view the website on the new server before changing the DNS.

  • Experience: At Bacan we've been making these processes invisible and successful for our clients since the year 2000.
